Kinja'd!!!

Computers is dumb. New SSD is installed ... and now my disc drive won’t spin up so I can’t install an OS!

BIOS shows both the SSD and ODD as being present. The ODD (which I just used two weeks ago) just doesn't seem to recognize that there's a disc inside.

Plus, it wants me to hit the “any” key and I don’t have one of those.

Did you reinstall the flux capacitor and reboot the softdrive?

change your boot order in your BIOS/UEFI  settings

ODD is 1st in the boot order. Everything’s set to allow legacy support. My UEFI doesn’t let me exclude things from the boot order so it keeps trying to boot over Ethernet when everything else fails.

I recently used both this ODD and my Windows 7 disc so I know both are good.

ODD motor drive grumbles  a bit when it tries to boot but the disc never spins up.

You sure the boot disk you have was burned correctly? What are you installing from the optical disk?

It’s right there - you can’t miss it.

Kinja'd!!!

It sounds like you need to find this one on your keyboard as it may be more appropriate.

The disc is a legit Windows 7 install disc.

Lenovo Y500. It's actually got a dedicated hard button to launch into a boot menu. All options lead the the same result pictured above.

Is this an internal ODD drive? Maybe the SATA c able is borked?

Internal. Is a laptop. I've moved beyond this issue but now the windows install keeps failing...

That’s annoying. Unfortunately I’m a little far away to run over with a USB drive.

Pretty hard to troubleshoot without another computer though. You have no way of knowing if your boot media is flawed or what. If you’ve got the DVD drive set as the first boot device, that “should” be all you need. Some motherboards have a different key to let you tell it explicitly what you want to boot from, but I’d guess if it isn’t detecting the DVD as bootable that won’t work.

Do you an office computer or something you can use to make a USB installer tomorrow?

Th e “copying files” stage takes 2 seconds instead of 10+ minutes like it should, then it fails on the “expanding files” stage because it’s trying to expand files it never copied.

Google says this could be a RAM issue but I've tried playing with the RAM (swapping slots, removing a stick, etc) to no avail.

Hmm, I’d assume bad disk before bad RAM, but who knows. If you had another machine you could make a Memtest 86 boot media to try to test the RAM:  https://www.memtest86.com/

Could be the ODD or the W7 disc dying. I’ve had both happen even when they had been working the day before. The legit MS W7 discs seem particularly flaky and will sometimes work in one drive and not another or die halfway through an install on a machine that will install Linux from a home burned disc on the same drive.  Maybe you can borrow an external ODD from someone and see if you have better luck? I’ve actually resorted to installing W7 on a tower with a USB ODD when the internal one refused to read the OEM install disc (this drive had no issues with other discs).

Who needs a GUI when you can do everything from the terminal? /s

But on a serious note, but mint GUI is pretty solid and familiar if you’re used to windows.
